Dear readers,
We are students at Mondragon University, the faculty of HUHEZI, in Eskoriatza (Gipuzkoa) and would like to welcome you to our new blog about Basques around the world. This blog is the outcome of the optional subject that we took last semester, titled Basques around The World.
When we first started the course we were asked to define what it was to be Basque. We had never been asked to do so, and, to tell you the truth, that was a complex task. The course is now over and we have reached no definition of what it is to be Basque. As a matter of fact, all the debates, readings, visits and interviews with Basques from other parts of the world that took place in our course have made us see that being Basque is not attached to a specific place or language; we have come to understand that there are different ways of being Basque and that they are all valid.
We would like to invite you to help us display, understand and validate the diverse meanings and ways of being Basque. We hope that this journey of discovery is enriching for all Basques in Euskal Herria and outside of it. We also hope that this blog can become a tiny step in trying to create a more solid bridge between the eight herrialdes.
Enara Goikoetxea, Ione Garai, Leire Agirre, Amaia Elkoro-Iribe, Maite Otxoa, Aiora Iturripea, Eneritz Legarreta, Zuriñe Uriagereka y Ane Ayerbe.

1. I believe that Izar (my ahizpa) & I were interviewed for this class. It's wonderful that we are all trying to weave the web of Basques through out the world. I agree that to be of a culture can be reached via so many attributes, interests and actions. For me, a way of expressing my "Basque-ness" has been through dancing and art.
Ahizpak Designs (a hobby, source of income and great passion for me) has opened many doors for us. We have met many Basques throughout the world while researching art & design of our past. Creating & designing our jewelry has brought me understanding of the importance of visual identity. Ultimately these years of Ahizpak has encouraged my enthusiasm in being a part of the Basque pride for many of our patrons.
My greatest hope for the near future (as Maite Otxoa knows) is to eventually be able to come and sell in Euskal Herria. To share the designs of a Basque-American with my peers, and hopefully new friends, in the motherland.

2. Yes, you were interviewed for this class! Thanks for your contribution (both the interview and the comment you have posted in our blog). Your interview has been recently published both in the Spanish and Basque version of this blog. We are still working on other interviews by other Basques outside EH, but we found yours specially interesting because of linguistic matters.
We are looking forward to seeing your designs in the Basque Country! Zorte on!!
