Hundreds of dogs were united in wedlock at a mass dog wedding ceremony organized in New Delhi on Saturday.

The event, held for the first time in India, had more than 100 canine participants - all dressed up for the occasion. The couples selected for marriage by their owners walked the aisle as they were showered with flower petals.

The ceremony was conducted by a priest who read the wedding vows and then declared the bride and groom married. Dog owner, Devyani Khosla, was still unsure about the practicalities of married life for her beloved pet. "I can't live without her. So I've not decided about that part", she said when asked if the blushing bride would be living with her new husband.

Dog owners say finding a suitable partner for their pets is not very easy and social events like these can help in finding the right mate for them. Meenakshi Ghei, owner of one of the dog grooms said she hoped "he gets a girl. He's been without one".

The elaborately organized event was held at one of New Delhi's popular shopping malls. The mall officials had asked for photographs of the dogs, owners were then provided with a select choice of mates for their pets. Dogs judged to be the best dressed or the cutest were also awarded prizes.

Comments:

1. This is a real unethical treatment of animals. You cannot marry dogs against their will.

This is not fair - just like the "arranged" marriage system of india where men and women are married without their will.

2. Are these dogs heterosexual or are same sex canine marriages allowed?

3. Reminds me of what goes on here at XMAS time nowadays; Americans bringing their DAMNED DOGS to the mall to get photographed with Santa. WTF? ...and don't even get me started on cats...

5. Sheesh! They worship rats, feed insects, consider freaky babies with tails as gods. Force marriages in little girls. Insert giant needles in their faces as part of religious rituals..known worldwide as Smelling nasty , are known worldwide as filthy , known worldwide as staring all the time. Now they marry dogs!
How is it they have such a high rate of masters degrees but still do incredibly stupid things!

and yet somehow they are stuck up...amazing!

6. "hmm...let me see, my family is starving because insects and rats are eating our crops...but i wont spray pesticide or kill the buggers....my people are starving in the streets but i wont touch the many cows that could provide sustinence......i have very little food but instead of giving it to poor people ..i will feed the rats....the same rats that are eating everything in india and spreading disease....wow i love my religion!"

7. I live in India and I've yet to see anyone worshipping a rat. We try to get rid of them.

As far as "eating cows". If people cannot afford rice, wheat or veggies, how the hell are they going to afford meat, which is always more expensive??

People here are not mal-nourished because they don't eat cows. They are malnourished because they cannot afford proper nutritious food and are limited to the cheaper standards of rice and veggies.

An agricultural vegetarian diet is more cost-effective than a meat diet. Slaughterhouses drain more resources than agriculture.

Anyway, as an Indian vegetarian Hindu, I can assure that I do not worship babies with tails or rats or cows. In fact, I've never seen or heard of rat worship here.

I worship the ONE DIVINE SOURCE, what you may call God/dess in english, through prayer, meditation, yoga and puja.

However, I do respect cows and other animals and that is why I refrain from killing and eating them. Just like you may refrain from killing and eating dogs, cats and horses, since they are usually the "sacred cows", so to speak, of the pre-dominantly meat-eating west.

Actually, nowadays India is about 50% non-veg as well. But even most meat-eaters here refrain from cows meat, with the exception of a few wealthy muslims perhaps.

But I do agree with you about Indians being "stuck up". We middle class and upper class Indians are stuck up, I'll admit that. But the lower classes amongst us tend to be more humble, but even they take pride in our ancient cultural history.

We come from a culture with alot of behavioural rules (especially between genders), so that may make us appear "stand-offish" when we travel or live abroad. It's something that is overcome with time and friendship.

And by the way, unfortunately Indians use alot of chemical laden pesticides on our crops. You in the west are fortunate to have an organic movement going on, and rather than shun that 1 Deepo, I would embrace it while you can!

There seems to be alot of misconceptions about India here, which is normal, the Indians amongst us who are not well read or well travelled also have silly misconceptions about other countries.

Anyway folks, I'm here to clear things up for you and not be stuck up.

8. Why don't the owners just marry their dogs and liberate the poor unwilling (because they're stupid)partners corced by their owners for their selfish and loony pleasure? It's not funny. It's a sorry spectacle.
