The telecommunication industry is being transformed.
Growth through transformation

After emerging from the crisis of 2000, the telecommunication industry is being transformed. Technological changes and the development of new services are affecting the core businesses of telecommunication operators. Voice continues to be the key driver in OECD telecommunication markets which have now attained revenues of USD 1 trillion. However, voice services, and the structure of telecommunication revenues, are evolving. Mobile services now make up 40% of all OECDarea telecommunication revenues, and mobile subscribers outnumber fixed subscribers by a ratio of 3 to 1. At the same time, technologies such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) are exerting strong downward pressure on prices for voice services. The impact of VoIP is apparent in prices for international fixed-line calls, which many VoIP operators now bundle into flat-rate subscription plans. As a result, the future of voice revenue streams is unclear.

John Elorriaga gifted his family home to serve as a regional museum in honor of his parents among hundreds of friends and supporters. After five years of planning and work, the ION (Idaho, Oregon, Nevada) Heritage Museum had its grand opening with a beautiful range of festivities in Jordan Valley, Oregon last Saturday, June 21st 2008.

EuskoMovie: First Short Film Contest at EuskoSare

EuskoSare presents its first online Short Film Contest: EuskoMovie 2008, where movies filmed with mobile phones, photo or video cameras will compete for three special prices. The project has been organised in collaboration with Filmoteca Vasca and the Cinematography division of Eusko Ikaskuntza. Those who would like to take part will be able to do so until July 20.

Gernika’s Jai Alai celebrates its reopening

After a year of refurbishment Gernika Jai Alai will reopen. Major acoustic improvements and maintenance upgrades have fixed cracks, water leaks and flooding damage. With these upgrades the venue can be a premier venue for other special events in addition to pelota.

Julen Manterola Agirre: Is Basque an Agglutinative Language?

University of California Santa Barbara celebrated a Basque Studies Symposium last week focusing on linguistics and literature. EuskoSare interviewed Julen Manterola Agirre from the University of the Basque Country on his presentation, "Is Basque an Agglutinative Language?".

Julen Manterola Agirre is from the University of the Basque Country in Vitoria-Gasteiz, the headquarters of the Basque Autonomous Government and capitol city of the province of Alava. He was in California last week to give a presentation at a Basque Studies Symposium at the University of California Santa Barbara titled, “Is Basque an Agglutinative Language?”. The conference was organized the the Spanish Portuguese Department with hopes of generating enough interest to add Basque language, history and cultural studies to its program.

Azkarate 2008 sign up deadline extended to June 15

EuskoSare has extended the application deadline for the Azkarate Palace reconstruction project, located in Lower Navarra. This volunteer reconstruction project will convert the Palace into an International Center for the Basque diaspora. It will be a meeting point for all the Basques and descendants of Basques who have an interest in tracing back their origins.
