University of California Santa Barbara celebrated a Basque Studies Symposium last week focusing on linguistics and literature. EuskoSare interviewed Julen Manterola Agirre from the University of the Basque Country on his presentation, "Is Basque an Agglutinative Language?".

Julen Manterola Agirre is from the University of the Basque Country in Vitoria-Gasteiz, the headquarters of the Basque Autonomous Government and capitol city of the province of Alava. He was in California last week to give a presentation at a Basque Studies Symposium at the University of California Santa Barbara titled, “Is Basque an Agglutinative Language?”. The conference was organized the the Spanish Portuguese Department with hopes of generating enough interest to add Basque language, history and cultural studies to its program.

EuskoSare has extended the application deadline for the Azkarate Palace reconstruction project, located in Lower Navarra. This volunteer reconstruction project will convert the Palace into an International Center for the Basque diaspora. It will be a meeting point for all the Basques and descendants of Basques who have an interest in tracing back their origins.

Basque Studies conference celebrated at University of California at Santa Barbara was a success according to organizers. Dr. Xabier Irujo shares a summary of his presentation.

On Wednesday, May 14th, the first of a series of Basque Studies conferences was held at University of California at Santa Barbara. According to organizer, Viola Miglio, the conference was well attended with over 100 people at the opening session and between 50 and 70 people attended the specialized sessions on linguistics and literature.

For 23 years Mary Gaztambide has organized Salt Lake City Basque dancing troups and food booths for this multi-cultural Living Traditions festival celebrated every year.
Salt Lake City has been celebrating the Living Traditions Festival for 23 years. The organizers, participants and visitors have been through it all from rain and snow storms to chorizo shortages. Utah's Mary Gaztambide is showcased in a Salt Lake City Tribune article, see link below. She has been instrumental in ensuring Utah Basque dancing and food booth organziations are always present and are able to showcase a bit of Basque culture in the multi-cultural festival.

"I find Basque fascinating for a number of reasons. I am hoping that the audience will be intrigued by its resilience and the culture that goes with it. As a citizen of Iceland, I am sensitive to the struggle small nations endure in order to make their voices heard globally."

The University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB) is holding a series of conferences on Basque Studies. EuskoSare is very interested in learning more about the driving forces behind this shceme.

The University of California, Santa Barbara will host the first of a series of symposiums on Basque Studies on Wednesday, May 14th, 2008. The organizers hope to spread interest in Basque studies as well as make a permanent center at the university. This symposium will focus on linguistic and literary aspects of Euskera and Basque writing works. Ten experts and writers from the US and Basque Country will present their intriguing topics.

Rosa Totorica was born in Gernika but moved to Idaho with her parents when she was only six months old. Proud of her basque roots, Rosa has taken on a new challenge: to strengthen EuskoSare in the United States and the USA virtual community, which she coordinates from Boise, Idaho.

Boise is the most populous city in Idaho. It is also home to about 15,000 basques. It is where the second largest Basque community in the US (the first is in Bakersfield, California) and one of the largest in the world reside, together with places like Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and the French and Spanish sides of the Basque Country.

www.euskosare.org EuskoSare is a big open and collaborative net for all the basques around the world, but also for their friends all who are the Global Basque Community. It´s in 4 languages and it offers information, services and communities services for all those users and collaborators interested on it.
